Fused AZS and sintered AZS are two common zirconia-aluminum-silica (AZS) composites that are commonly used as refractory materials for glass furnaces and glass kilns in the glass industry. Although they both contain similar main components, there are some important differences in the preparation process and performance characteristics.Fireramo, as a manufacturer of refractory bricks, in this article we will introduce the differences between fused AZS and sintered AZS in the following aspects.
Fused AZS is produced by melting raw materials in a high temperature melt and then pouring them into a mold to solidify. This process gives fused AZS a high density and uniform chemical composition distribution, which improves its refractoriness and corrosion resistance.
Sintered AZS blocks are produced by sintering the raw material at temperatures of 1700-1750°C using a variety of methods, such as conventional dry pressing, isostatic pressing and vibration casting. The chemical composition of sintered AZS is similar to that of melt-cast AZS, but sintered AZS is carbon free.
Fusion cast AZS has good thermal shock and chemical stability and can withstand high temperature glass melts. It has low permeability and high erosion resistance and is suitable for use in the melting zone of glass furnaces.
The main phases of sintered AZS are ZrO2, alumina and mullite. It is virtually free of glassy phases. Sintered AZS has a more homogeneous chemical composition and microstructure than fused AZS. It has lower thermal conductivity and thermal expansion, resulting in lower heat loss and better resistance to thermal shock.

Fused-cast AZS is mainly used in areas that come into contact with high-temperature glass melts, such as glass melting zones and glass pool areas. It resists corrosion and erosion from the molten glass and maintains a long service life.
Sintered AZS is mainly used in glass kilns in areas with high temperature airflow and high mechanical wear, such as the flue of glass kilns, flue blocks and the top area of fiberglass drawing kilns. It is able to withstand high-temperature airflow and abrasion and maintains good performance stability.
Fused AZS blocks offer better performance and longer service life. However, the lower price of sintered AZS blocks makes them a cost-effective alternative to fused cast products in many applications.
